Apparitions
In the 1980's, Liu Sola was famous as the enfant terrible of contemporary Chinese literature. In this latest album from Also Productions, her spirit of rebellion and defiance of conventions are not only alive and well, but also given magnificent musical expression, in nother ground-breaking performance which also features the work of master drum player Pheeroan akLaff. The sound overlays the primal force of heavy rock on Chinese drum styles; but listen carefully and you hear a very complex bass line, and Sola's voice, which by turns carries and decenters the melody. The result is an album, both sophisticated and physical, that will appeal to all jazz aficionados, rock enthusiasts, and just plain lovers of good contemporary music.
